Unboxing: May SoKawaii

Sub_Blog2

The theme for May’s SoKawaii box was ‘Cozy at Home’ – pretty fitting considering I have been stuck in mine since mid-March! I love getting subscription boxes, it really livens up my post – the majority of the time I don’t get anything, and when I do, I know what I’ve ordered, so to get something which is a total surprise is really exciting!

Once again, the SoKawaii box came out with everything laid out in pink tissue paper. I’ve said before, but I really love how SoKawaii pack their boxes. The visual impact is so strong, and it just makes it even more exciting, and makes me feel like the box was packed with care rather than hastily put together.

The first item I pulled out was this really cute Animal Crossing notebook! I’ve been playing a lot of Animal Crossing: New Horizons since I’ve been in lockdown, and I always appreciate a cute notebook. I’ve been using this one to try and organise my photos and keep track of which folders they’re in on my Mac! Not sure how succesfully, mind you, but it’s cute nonetheless!

Also in the box was this cute Pikachu and Eevee organising rack. It’s the perfect colour for my bedroom so it’s in there at the moment, but it has nothing in it! It is a touch on the small side, so I’m struggling to think of what I can put in there. All of my toiletries and things like that are in my bathroom, otherwise the obvious choice would be things like cotton buds and cotton pads. I’ll think of something, I’m sure!

Next up was this cute Rilakkuma pillow cover. It’s not really a pillowcase as it is open at the ends, but it’s still pretty functional. It’s made of a towelling material, so would be good for popping over your normal pillow if you’ve got damp hair or something like that – I’m very prone to going to bed with wet hair, so that’s what I’ll be using mine for!

I also received this cable holder. I’m not sure if it’s a character, or just a random design as I’ve now thrown away the packaging – if you know, please tell me! I’m not sure what the function of cable holders are really, aside from the obvious, as I’ve never had any cable related issues! It’s still pretty cute, and doesn’t look obviously like something which I’m not using it for so I have it on my desk without cable!

Finally I got this Hello Kitty plushie! Whilst it is very cute, I’m pretty gutted, as the other plushie option was Pompompurin who is my absolute favourite Sanrio character! By contrast, Hello Kitty is my least favourite, but I guess that’s the way it goes!

That was everything in my SoKawaii May box! Which item is your favourite? Mine is probably the Pikachu and Eevee storage rack!

Day 9 – A movie you can recite in your sleep

I’ve mentioned a lot of films so far in 30 Days Of: Film that are huge parts of my life that I can definitely nominate here; Jurassic Park, Popstar, Role Models and Oliver! to name a few.

So, to talk about a different film – I have seen Bad Neighbours more times than I care to admit. I still find it a really funny film, and infinitely quotable. There are so many great moments in that film.

So it’s either that, or Shrek!

2020 Challenges: May Recap

Sub_Challenges2

May signifies two entire months in lockdown, two months of not leaving the house, not seeing anyone but my parents and my nan. It’s really starting to grate now, but there isn’t much to do about it (other than complain).

Watch 40 anime

May end total: 14

I didn’t get any new shows watched in May. The Fairy Tail game comes out soon, so I’ve been spending all of my anime watching time on catching up with the Fairy Tail anime so I’m at the right point for that. I’ve only got about 100 more episodes to go (…) before I’m up to the arc that the game is set in.

Watch 40 movies in the cinema

May end total: 5

This is still an impossibility, so no movement here!

Platinum 20 games

May end total: 3

By May end I had got the platinum in Persona 5 Royal and The Nonary Games! Both quite different games, but I enjoyed playing both.

Read 15 books

May end total: 4

I managed to read a couple of books by the end of May, including one I beta-read for my friend. I said on Twitter, but I hope everyone gets to read it some day because it was incredible.

Finish 100 best movies

May end total: 2

Finish Naruto

May end total: 3 episodes

Day 8 – A movie that makes you sad

The thing about me is it’s very easy to make me sad. I cry a lot. Basically any film where a dog dies will make me instantly sad, for one thing. I’ll also cry at pretty much any Disney film, and anime films have a terrible habit of making me cry also.

The last film I cried at was I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, but the last non-anime film I cried at was probably Toy Story 4, going back through the list of films I’ve seen at the cinema for my challenges.

Day 7: A movie that makes you happy

As a child I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house after school, as my parents worked full time and depending on what shift my dad was on, my grandparents looked after me. My grandparents didn’t have Sky, and I had a few toys there but the thing that kept me most occupied was Oliver!. I would watch it every single day I was there, at least once a day (with Nan fastforwarding through the parts she thought weren’t suitable for my little 5 year old eyes – I didn’t know Nancy died until I was about 14).

Now, Oliver! reminds me of those early days spend at my grandparents house and brings back a lot of happy memories. It definitely kickstarted my love of musicals too!

I’m lumping day 5 and 6 in together, because I had a little personal drama and missed posting day 5 and don’t want to be behind for the rest of the month!

Day 5: Your favourite drama movie

When I was at university, I decided that, off the back of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World coming out, I would do a “Jason Schwartzman” challenge where I’d watch all of his films (something I might redo with another actor for this blog at some point, but we all know how bad I am at watching films).

rushmore

This was really my entryway into Wes Anderson films, having only seen snippets of The Royal Tenenbaums as a child on a longhaul flight. Through my viewings I found Rushmore, and fell in love with it instantly. I’ve no doubt that there’ll be many more Wes Anderson films appearing in this challenge, but Rushmore is always going to be my standout.

Day 6: Your favourite comedy movie

This was really tough for me, so I’m going to pick two films I love dearly. The first is Role Models. I have seen this film more times than I care to recount, and I still find it as funny now as I did the day I watched it. There’s so much subtle humour and so many hilarious jokes (and also Paul Rudd). It’s an incredibly funny film and I love it a lot.

The second film is another that means a lot to me too – Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. When I went to see this at the cinema, I had NO idea what to expect, I just went because I loved The Lonely Island. After the opening song, I felt like I had never laughed as much in my life (and also like me and my friend were the only ones laughing). Again, I’ve watched Popstar more times than I can count, and it still holds up, and also has a killer soundtrack.

Day 4: Your favourite horror movie

This is a really tough question for me, as I generally don’t watch horror films. I had a couple of experiences when I was younger where I watched two films that were definitely too old for me (IT and Scream, I was about 8 or 9 at the time), and it’s sort of put me off horror films since. I was really traumatised, I couldn’t go in the shower or the garage for so long afterwards, and slept with the light on until I was about 16.

I know I’m probably missing out on a lot of great films, but I am very much not a brave person, and I don’t get any enjoyment out of being scared.

The limit of my horror watching is probably The Purge series, which I have seen (all bar the most recent film), and I did actually quite enjoy.

Day 3: Your favourite action/adventure movie

I kind of struggled with this question as I wasn’t sure what defines the genre, but after looking on IMDB I’ve come up with an answer!

filmstruck-4-back-to-the-future-700x300

My favourite action/adventure film is Back To The Future. I was fairly late in watching BTTF, having my first viewing at around 19. Since then, it’s become a film that is really close to my heart, and I’ve watched it multiple times. I was lucky enough to be given a press pass to the Secret Cinema event when that was on, and I loved every moment of it.

Through conventions I’ve met both Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd too, which is really cool! (Though looking at the photos now, they’re pretty bad ones of me!)

Day 2: The last movie you watched

I had to really wrack my brain for this one as time in lockdown does not exist and feels non-linear, so I’m forgetting a lot of what happened when as a result! Having checked my Twitter feed, I can see the last film I watched was I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, which I bought on blu-ray on its release back in March.

I’m hoping to write up a proper review of the film in due course (late again, what’s new?), so for now I’ll say I really loved it a lot. I had been warned that I was going to cry prior to watching, and oh boy, I sure did.

I-Want-To-Eat-Your-Pancreas

To loosely explain what the film is about without spoiling too much, it centres on the story of the male protagonist and a girl, Sakura, whom he meets by chance. Our protagonist finds Sakura’s diary and discovers she has terminal cancer. Sakura forbids him from telling anyone else, and enlists his help in living her life to the full before her prognosis is up. I’m sure from that description alone, you can see why I was prewarned that I’d cry!

Day 1: What is your favourite movie?

For as long as I can remember (well… since about 1993 I suppose), my favourite movie has always been Jurassic Park.

Jurassic park

Jurassic Park kickstarted my first obsession, dinosaurs. I have really fond memories of visitng the Natural History Museum as a child, and I had anything dinosaur I can get my hands on. I remember before Jurassic Park came out on video, I had the ‘Making Of’ video, and I watched it constantly, even though as a 4 year old, most of it more than likely went over my head.

With an incredible use of effects, favourite practical over CGI, Jurassic Park is a movie which still stands up today, some 27 years later, and still looks amazing now.
