2017 Challenges: September Recap

Sub_Challenges2

Make 10 new cosplays (including one entirely from scratch)
I love starting these posts off positively, only to watch them go rapidly downhill. As always, 10 new cosplays is the least of my problems. I’ve got 7 in the bag already, and MCM is at the end of this month where I’ll be debuting three more, reaching my target! That’s not even counting the 5 new cosplays for Hibanacon, one for MCM Birmingham and another for Hyper Japan…

Watch 30 anime series
I still feel stupidly confident about this one. I’ve now finished 12, and I know I’ve only got two and a half months to go and I’m not even half way yet, but I feel like it’s doable. I have a few series’ I’ve started already, so hopefully this number can increase soon!

Platinum 12 games
I actually managed to add another one to this total as well! Two platinum trophies in 10 months, Jade from 3 years ago would be ashamed. I still feel like I can nudge this up before the year is out – maybe get halfway? We’ll see!

Watch 30 new ‘old’ films
I am determined to break double figures on this one, even if I’m still loitering at 1 film watched. Stay tuned!

Watch 60 films in the cinema
My ‘end of September’ total was 31. Just over halfway. Is it doable? Probably not. Am I going to try? Also probably not, I’m really busy with all the other challenges which actually stand a chance of being completed.

Clear the gaming backlog
What’s a little backlog between friends? Yeah, so I just… can’t do this. It’s impossible. Even if I’m not adding to my physical backlog, I’m mentally adding games to it, “I must play that when I’ve finished some of these games.” It’s neverending!

Here’s hoping for a November miracle!

I’m not sure what I expected Netsuzou TRap (NTR) to be going into it, but I know it wasn’t what I got. The Crunchyroll description makes it sound like some sort of cute drama about two girls who realise they have feelings about each other. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I honestly hated almost all of it, and had it not been for the fact that each episode not been 8 minutes long and I was desperate to boost my numbers for my anime challenge, I would have given it up after giving it three episodes.

As mentioned in the Crunchyroll description, the premise is that two friends are dating two friends, and they fool around with each other and eventually realise they have feelings for each other, not their boyfriends. What the description doesn’t mention is that a lot of the ‘playful’ things Hotaru does to Yuma are completely unsolicited and in fact downright rejected, giving a really rapey vibe to the whole show.

Let’s start by examining the characters. You have Yuma, the main character, who is possibly one of the most idiotic and oblivious characters I’ve ever come across in anything. She could have everything spelled out for her and she still wouldn’t understand. It takes Yuma the full 12 episodes of NTR to realise she has feelings for Hotaru. Quite why she does is anyone’s guess, because Hotaru is a real piece of work. Hotaru constantly ignores Yuma’s protesting and forces herself onto her on more than one occasion, all the meanwhile telling Yuma it’s for her own good because she doesn’t want to lose her boyfriend, Takeda, due to her inexperience. Hotaru is manipulative to the extreme, and doesn’t care at all about Yuma; never asking her feelings or even listening to what she’s saying.

As if these two delights aren’t enough, the worst is yet to come. Hotaru’s boyfriend, Fujiwara, is the scum of the earth. I know that’s the point of him, to make Yuma look like the obvious choice for Hotaru, but honestly I kind of feel like him and Hotaru deserve each other. For every negative attribute Hotaru displays, Fujiwara just amplifies it. Throughout the whole show you think there can’t be much left for him to do

The only bright spot on this whole stain of a show is Yuma’s boyfriend, Takeda. He’s genuinely a nice person, which is apparently rare in this universe. He cares for people, and just doesn’t deserve what Yuma puts him through.

I feel like the point of NTR is to get you behind Yuma, but it’s just not possible. She is so thoroughly unlikeable, that there’s just no lure to invest in her as a character. She doesn’t care about others, why should we care about her? In discussion with my housemate about NTR, he said the only resolution to the plot that he would accept is if all the characters got hit by a truck, “except Takeda… he’s alright”, and I have to say I agree.

Conclusion:

A vapid excuse for a show that wants to push towards a happy ending for characters who don’t deserve one. It has it’s funny moments, but nothing that stands out on reflection. It should be an easy show to forget, but it’s so bad it regrettably lingers in memory.

Review: Blue Reflection

Sub_VideoGames2

Blue Reflection is the latest offering from Gust, the developer who previously brought us the Atelier series. A brand new IP, Blue Reflection focuses on the story of Hinako, a former child ballet star who starts a new high school. She discovers that she’s a Reflector, the game’s version of a magical girl, along with her new friends, Yuzu and Lime. As the story unfolds we learn of a parallel world, The Common, where monsters feed off emotions. Hinako and her friends must use the power of friendship to defeat the evil Sephirot and save the world.

30 Days Of: Gaming, Day 29 & 30

Day 29: A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving and Day 30: Your favourite game of all time

So, as many of you may know, my favourite game ever is Persona 4: Golden. What you may not know is the first time I ever played Persona 4, I totally hated it.

I can’t remember how old I was, I think about 16 or so, and it was the PS2 copy I had. I played it for about an hour, and then never again. It just didn’t click with me, and I couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to do, or where I was supposed to go. It was a nightmare and I hated it.

At this point in my gaming career, I’d been mostly accustomed to playing platformers and Pokémon, so the concept of an RPG (let alone a JRPG) was completely baffling to me.

Over the next few years I played a lot of Western RPGs and eventually, when I was 22, I bought a PlayStation Vita. Falling into the “PS Vita’s got no games” trap, I looked at a list of the top rated games and saw Persona 4: Golden at the top. Being an idiot, I hadn’t realised I’d already attempted to play this game in its previous iteration, and I bought myself a copy. About half an hour in, I realised.

I continued with the game, and it’s the best thing I ever did. I fell completely in love with the characters, and I can’t imagine a time when I wasn’t obsessed with it. I don’t know what I’d do without Persona 4, or the rest of the Persona series.

On a wider note Persona 4: Golden also encouraged me to give JRPGs a shot, and now it’s my favourite genre, so go figure.

Day 27: Most epic scene ever

This was really hard to narrow down! But I made a choice (in the end)! Final Fantasy XV spoilers ahead.

Final Fantasy XV has some really great moments but the train scene, for me, really stole the show. There’s this whole feeling of not really knowing what’s going on which makes you feel really uneasy throughout the whole sequence, and then when everything finally clicks, you’re left to deal with the consequences of your actions, and accept the fact you just pushed dear, sweet Prompto off of a moving train (*coughbestboycough*). To be honest, I could probably give a reason for each scene in FFXV for being my favourite thing ever, but the train scene is the one that stuck with me the most and really left me in shock as well as giving me a whole other boatload of feelings.

Day 26: Best voice acting

We all know there are certain voice actors whose names mean that at least one thing in a game is going be great. Troy Baker is one of those actors. I could listen to his voice all day. I can’t even limit this to one character because everything he does is gold.

This was totally an excuse to show off the fact I’ve met him. Look, here is proof and everything.

Day 25: A game you plan on playing

Danganronpa V3 comes out at the end of September, and I am almost beside myself with excitement. This series means so much to me, and I’m so excited to have a new story to unfold. I’m currently (trying) to finish a replay of the first two games by playing Danganronpa 1-2 Reload, which is just making me even more hyped for release day!

Day 24: Favourite classic game

I can spend hours playing Tetris. In fact, I definitely have. It’s just so addictive, and there’s a lot about it that really appeals to my OCD side – there’s nothing like sliding that last piece into place and watching several lines at a time disappear!

tetris

Tetris was the first handheld game I played when I borrowed a school friend’s GameBoy, and I still get a lot of enjoyment out of it now if I let myself fall down that never-ending rabbit hole.

Day 23: Game which you think had the best graphics or art style

I really love the art style of Danganronpa. I know mostly it’s just an anime style (which I obviously like, go figure), but I especially enjoy the punishment scene animations and the garish, over-the-top death sequences.

dr

Purely from a spectacle of realistic graphics, the game that’s probably blown me away the most is The Last of Us. I remember my mum coming into my room and asking me if I was watching a movie, but up until that point I hadn’t really considered that the graphics were that realistic and just stort of took them for granted. Once I’d had it pointed out to me by an outsider I definitely appreciated just how mindblowing the graphics were, and took in every single detail.
