Review: Assassin’s Creed Rogue

Sub_VideoGames2

As the famous saying goes, “There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and a new Assassin’s Creed game every year.” At least, that’s how the saying could have gone, until Ubisoft decided to outdo themselves and launch two Assassin’s Creed games on the same day at the tail end of 2014.

With the world and his wife harping on about Ubisoft’s new-gen offering and those screenshots, it was easy to forget our reliable last-gen consoles were also ready to take us back to the sprawling world Ubisoft have carved out, and for the very last time.

News: BAFTA Rising Star nominations announced

Sub_Film2

With awards season on the horizon, the nominees have been announced for BAFTA’s EE Rising Star Award.

The five nominees have had a remarkable year between them, and with huge films ahead of them the future sets to be even brighter for them.

Leading the pack is home-grown talent Jack O’Connell. Star of cult TV teen drama Skins, and more recently the lead in the Angelina Jolie directed film Unbroken, O’Connell has gone from the small screen to appearing in huge blockbusters, also appearing in last year’s 300: Rise of An Empire.

Up next is Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is probably most known as the titular character from 2013 period drama Belle. We’ll see her next in sci-fi flick Jupiter Ascending.

Miles Teller, star of the critically acclaimed, but yet to be released in the UK, Whiplash has also received a well-earned nomination. Teller will star as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) in the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four.

Margot Robbie is next in the shortlist, most recognisable from her recent role as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf Of Wall Street. Robbie has certainly come a long way from her role as Donna Freedman in Australian soap Neighbours, and has been recently cast as two iconic characters in upcoming films; Jane in Tarzan, and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

Finally, rounding off the pack is Shailene Woodley, star of the Divergent series and last year’s blub-fest, The Fault In Our Stars.

I don’t know about you, but my money is on Miles Teller to win. The winner of the EE Rising Star award is selected by public vote, so it really is anyone’s award!

The BAFTA ceremony is on February 8th.

Can poor gameplay be masked by excellent storytelling?

Sub_VideoGames2

Games are now becoming such storytelling masterpieces that it’s becoming more common to hear of them being adapted to film. The Last of Us, Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed are currently going through the adaptation process right now but, importantly, they are games that are critically acclaimed (though the later Assassin’s Creed games are somewhat less so).

Often, the first ideas we have of upcoming games are about their story and with months of coverage before they even get released, it’s totally possible to completely buy into a game before you’ve even seen any actual gameplay footage. This happened to me with Murdered: Soul Suspect; the more I read about the premise and the story, the more excited I got and couldn’t wait to play.

Review: Gods Will Be Watching

Sub_VideoGames2

They might have been far and few between in the past, but choice-based games are now becoming a prevalent gaming genre. Described as a “point-and-click thriller”, Gods Will Be Watching is set across six chapters, and is a minimalistic foray asking you to set aside your morals in order to solve a series of puzzles. Based on a mini-game created for a Ludum Dare 26 challenge, Gods Will Be Watching was an intriguing game, if nothing else.

Gods Will Be Watching is initially quite frustrating. There is a lack of instruction and objectives, and the first chapter seems to introduce players to a new level of thinking, rather than any story or gameplay elements. It’s because of this that it’s easy to find yourself at the game over screen fairly often. Once you’ve seen it once, you should become accustomed to it because you’ll be seeing it quite regularly.

Secret Cinema presents Back to The Future: The Verdict

Sub_Film2

After nearly a week of cancellations, the Secret Cinema finally opened its doors to legions of Back To The Future fans on Thursday 31st July. The event, which saw the building of the fictional town of Hill Valley from the hit movie, and stage the Hill Valley Fair, was held in a secret London location. Though punters were sceptical in the lead up to the event, and on the journey from the unmentionable train station to the event itself, all doubts were erased as soon as you set foot onto the property.

Secret Cinema really live up to their name, and all information was withheld until the last possible minute, including the location of the event which was emailed out to revellers just the day before. Unusually for a Secret Cinema event, the film was disclosed which helped to create the hype – normally customers don’t even know what film they’re watching until it rolls on the night.

Armed with dress codes and new identities, attendees could put in as much, or as little, effort as they liked. The result was overwhelming, and it made you feel a part of something special. The word ‘immersive’ has been paraded around a lot in relation to the event, but rightly so.

Review: 22 Jump Street

Sub_Film2

Reboots are a tricky business. Sequels are even trickier. When something is successful, Hollywood has a tendency of latching on and ruining a good thing, so when 22 Jump Street was announced the world got nervous. 21 Jump Street was an unexpected hit, with critics and moviegoers alike.

The last words of Captain Dickson (Ice Cube), “You two sons of bitches are going to college!”, in 21 Jump Street left us with no doubts about where the sequel was headed. Though the opening scene was the focus of much of the trailers and press junkets, and you will no doubt have seen it, it’s still hilarious and provides some great jokes and skits which will set you up ready to keep the laughs coming through the rest of the film. Push past the opening scene and 22 Jump Street heads straight to college, where Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) are set to work the same case again.

The problem with Delsin

Sub_VideoGames2

inFamous: Second Son was the PlayStation 4 game we were all waiting for. The first proper foray into the capabilities of next-gen gaming. For those familiar with Sucker Punch’s previous PS3 titles, it would be the chance to see where the story of conduits would go post-Cole, but for those taking their first venture into the world, it would be a new opportunity to get behind some superpowers of their own.

There’s no doubting that inFamous: Second Son is a great game, with some spectacularly beautiful graphics and brilliant gameplay, but the experience was marred by the unlikeable main character, Delsin Rowe. Cocky, arrogant and immature, the Second Son protagonist epitomises the worst of all the qualities we’ve become accustomed to as comic books and superheroes continue to bombard popular culture.

With two playthroughs for the good karma and bad karma endings, it can feel like a long ride when the main character just feels like a complete jerk. So just where does it all go wrong for Delsin?
