Day 9: Your first anime crush

My first anime crush was back in the days before I even knew what anime was, watching Pokémon. I don’t quite know why, as he’s definitely not my type of character now, but I really loved James when I was younger!

If we count Pokémon as my first anime, then my first anime crush when I consciouly knew what anime was came about during my third anime, Attack on Titan. Levi is definitely my type of character, and probably the reason I like most characters I do like. Whilst I don’t like James much, I still love Levi and he’s probably one of my favourite Attack on Titan characters.

Day 7: Which character would you want to be your workout buddy?

This one was pretty tough because I have watched a lot of sports anime in my time, and it goes without saying that any of the characters would be prime workout buddies.

I’ve gone for a double pick here, firstly choosing Aida Riko from Kuroko No Basuke. I feel like her scan ability would be really helpful in order to bring out the best in my workouts and target key areas!

For the same reason, I’m also going for Matsuoko Gou from Free! Gou’s love of muscles and experience in putting together training plans would really come in handy!

Day 5: An anime you’re ashamed you enjoy

Sorry to be super boring, but there’s nothing I’m really ashamed about. I made it a point to not be ashamed about anything I enjoy after spending much of my teenage years feeling the same.

Day 6: Character you would like to cosplay

Oh boy…. that’s kind of a loaded question. I have so many cosplay plans from anime. I want to cosplay from every Ghibli movie, for a start. So far I’ve only done Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle, so I’ve got a long way to go on that.

Other cosplans that I had for this year were Pixie-Bob from Boku No Hero Academia, Ray from The Promised Neverland, and Izumi from Love Stage, but who knows if I’m going to be able to leave the house this year to be able to do them!

Day 4: Which character(s) would you want as a best friend?

After much deliberation, my chosen anime bestie is Tachibana Makoto from Free!. Makoto proves time and time again over the course of all Free! series that he’s the sweetest, kindest, and most genuinely caring out of all of the Free! boys, and in fact probably in any anime I’ve watched. He clearly loves his friends, and as the designated mum friend is always making sure Haru remains a semi-normal functioning human.

He’s also got backstroke for days.

When’s the perfect time to revive a dead feature? Social isolation! In an ideal world I’d kick back off on the second day of the month so each new theme starts in a brand new month, but if I keep thinking like that, I’ll never get these posted! I think I might try and double up on some posts and make that a goal for the start of April!

Day 2: Most recent completed anime

As is customary for the start of any new anime season, at the start of the winter season, I took on far too many seasonal shows. I’ve ended up dropping a fair few (and one was put on indefinite hiatus, boo!), but a few have remained. The first to finish was Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It.

The premise of the show is that two ‘science types’ confess their love for each other, but then set about proving their love by completing a series of experiments. It’s a really funny show, and really light-hearted. I’ll try and get a proper review up soon, but to cut the mystery, I gave it a 7 on MAL, which is pretty decent!

Day 1: Very first anime

Way back before I even knew what anime was, back when I was 11 or 12, my first was Pokémon. Pokémon was something I was pretty obsessed with in my youth, and still enjoy playing now. I haven’t watched the anime for a really long time, probably since I was about 13 or so – when I last watched it they were still in the Kanto region. I’m not certain I would watch it now. I feel like it’s a lot of time to invest into something, and Pokémon has already had enough of my time.

As an adult making a conscious decision to watch anime, the first anime I watched was Death Note. Death Note is something I should probably rewatch as I can’t really remember, but it still holds a fond place in my heart. I even cosplayed L a couple of years ago – here’s a photo of that with my friend, Chelsie,as Misa.

Whilst I get my new features off the ground, and get planning new content, I thought I’d ressurect an old feature; 30 Days Of.

If you recall, these were daily (theoretically anyway) blog posts centred around a theme. We kicked off with 30 Days Of: Gaming, and also ended there… Whoops. I do think I might revisit gaming as looking back on some of my answers, things have definitely changed.

For now, I’m going to take a stab at 30 Days Of: Anime using these prompts I found online.

Day 29: A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving and Day 30: Your favourite game of all time

So, as many of you may know, my favourite game ever is Persona 4: Golden. What you may not know is the first time I ever played Persona 4, I totally hated it.

I can’t remember how old I was, I think about 16 or so, and it was the PS2 copy I had. I played it for about an hour, and then never again. It just didn’t click with me, and I couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to do, or where I was supposed to go. It was a nightmare and I hated it.

At this point in my gaming career, I’d been mostly accustomed to playing platformers and Pokémon, so the concept of an RPG (let alone a JRPG) was completely baffling to me.

Over the next few years I played a lot of Western RPGs and eventually, when I was 22, I bought a PlayStation Vita. Falling into the “PS Vita’s got no games” trap, I looked at a list of the top rated games and saw Persona 4: Golden at the top. Being an idiot, I hadn’t realised I’d already attempted to play this game in its previous iteration, and I bought myself a copy. About half an hour in, I realised.

I continued with the game, and it’s the best thing I ever did. I fell completely in love with the characters, and I can’t imagine a time when I wasn’t obsessed with it. I don’t know what I’d do without Persona 4, or the rest of the Persona series.

On a wider note Persona 4: Golden also encouraged me to give JRPGs a shot, and now it’s my favourite genre, so go figure.
